The Story Behind PYCCKUU

It all started when I got a WAM Account. It was the first time I had to think of an e-mail login. I didn't want to use some combination of my name. I wanted something unique, something that would have meaning to me, something that might perplex others.

Then it hit me. I would use PYCCKUU. What the hell is "PYCCKUU?" you might ask yourself.

Good question. Several people have asked me, so I figured it was time to alleviate everyone's worries about my saneness. So, here we go...

PYCCKUU is Russian for Russian. "Huh?," is the usual response I get for giving that answer, so here is the same explanation, but a little more detailed: PYCCKUU, in the Russian (Cyrillic) alphabet, is pronounced "roo-ski" ("roo-" as in the English word "root," and "ski" as in the English word "ski"). This word, in Russian, literally means "Russian." It can be used as an adjective, but it could also be a noun, referring to a person from Russia, in other words, a Russian.

Why "PYCCKUU?" Contrary to the beliefs of some, I am not Russian (actually, I'm mostly English by birth). I like to use PYCCKUU because I studied Russian. I was a Russian Language and Linguistics major at the University of Maryland at College Park. While at school, I chose this as my login for my WAM account and it sort of stuck. As I got more e-mail accounts across campus, I kept the same login name (except for physics, where they forced you to use your name).

It REALLY stuck with me. As you might have seen above, when I renewed my license plates for my first car, I decided that I would use "PYCCKUU" as my tag number. I received many comments about it from strangers in parking lots, in drive thrus at fast food restaurants and the like. Now that I am no longer in Maryland, my car no longer has PYCCKUU tags.

Most recently, I have named my web server, the machine you are reading this document on right now, www.pycckuu.org.
